Yttrium-stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) single crystals are a relatively cheap and hard wearing substrate which has a good match with many single and multiplication oxides. YSZ was one of the earliest materials used for stabilizing high-temperature superconducting thin films of YBCO. If using it for optical transmission experiments then get double side polished otherwise single side polished is the most common.

Zirconia as a pure material goes through 3 phase transitions on cooling from high temperatures to low temperature from Cubic to tetragonal to monoclinic. This results in stresses which cause solid forms of the material to break up. Yttria (Y2O3) is added to the melt from 8-13 mol % to stabilize the Zirconia forming Yttrium-stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) in the cubic phase at room temperature. At crystal substrates, we use 8% YSZ single crystals which give us all the great mechanical and dielectric properties of ZrO2 at a very reasonable cost. 8% YSZ is very stable up to 1000C which is above the temperature of most thin film growth temperatures.

Zirconium oxide (Zirconia) is a material with high hardness, high strength, high toughness, high wear resistance and excellent chemical resistance and many physical and chemical properties. As such zirconia has been widely applied in various fields: ceramics, refractories, machinery, electronics, optics, and aerospace.
